Day 1 - Group 11

A) Who is in your group and why did you guys decide to be a group together?

Our Group comprises of Alex Luzarraga, Marco Navarro, Hugo Scala, and myself, Brendan Lyden. We all decided to create a group together because we are all good friends and are all hard workers. Also, we wanted to branch out from our usual physics groups and experience something different.

B) What is your initial plan to fulfill the objective of launching a ball a given distance?

Our initial plan to fulfill the objective of launching a ball a given distance consists of a marble rolling down a zig-zag track, possibly made of PVC pipes, and eventually rolling into a pulley which will raise it to an included plane. Once the ball arrives at the incline plane, it will roll down the plane and a seesaw contraption. Because of the sudden change in mass, the marble will affect the torque of the seesaw and eventually tip into a catapult which will launch it to the target and switch on a lightbulb.

C) What challenges do you anticipate facing?

One challenge I anticipate facing involves the complexity of our design. Personally, I believe there are very many small things that must occur in order to complete the task. Also, because the target can be one of three options, I feel that building a catapult and pre-setting it so that it can launch to all three locations will be the most difficult task. Finally, because we have never formally worked together, I anticipate that our group may have a little barrier to overcome in the early stages of working together; however, I trust that we will be able to overcome any challenge that we might encounter.
